Students at Lakeview Middle School in Winter Garden collected in excess of $1000.00 during Lakeview’s first Penny Harvest Drive. Unlike other programs, Penny Harvest puts the most important decisions in the hands of students - the Penny Harvest Philanthropic Roundtable - who themselves decide which community problems to tackle and how to get the job done. These students, nominated for their outstanding community involvement by their teachers, will undertake the challenge of using their Penny Harvest funds to make grants to non-profit organizations. These young philanthropists identify and prioritize community needs, research, visit local organizations, such as senior homes, shelters, and interview local government leaders, and make the tough decisions on how their Penny Harvest funds can best make a difference in their communities.

OCPS Service learning coordinator, Wendy Doromal, and UCF Service Learning student Nick Valliere, picked up 17 bags of pennies to bring to Brinks Security to be counted.

Students, Baonhu Nguyen and Christen Ram help take the pennies to the truck for loading.
