Over 300 students from OCPS schools submitted art for the 2nd Annual Orange County Public Schools/Global Peace Film Festival Peace Art Exhibit. Selected art was displayed at the Rotunda at the Orlando City Hall for the month of September. A reception held on September 21, the United Nations International Day of Peace, was attended by over 100 students, teachers, parents, grandparents, community partners of the Service Learning Program, and community members. Henry Maldonado, President of Channel 6, sponsored the reception and spoke briefly to the gathering. Nina Streich, Director of the Global Peace Film Festival commented that she loved every piece of artwork, and congratulated the students. The reception guests were greeted by TCHS Service Learning Academy President, Connor Murphy.
Stephanie Kern, a senior at Timber Creek High School, spoke about art as a means of communication and a way to promote social justice. Stephanie has exhibited her art at the City Arts Factory in Orlando and will be having a one-person show there this Spring. She spent her summer working with children suffering from AIDs in South Africa. In July she created four paintings depicting the children she met in Africa.
All exhibit participants received certificates. The first, second and third place winners received prizes including film festival tickets, gift certificates from Darden Restaurants, and Sea World tickets. Congratulations to the students who participated in the exhibit and to the winners!
