Service Learning Outdoor Classroom to be Built!

May 3, 2008

The Golden Rule Foundation has partnered with the Service Learning Academy to build an outdoor service learning classroom near the wetlands on the Timber Creek campus! The classroom will serve the Service Learning Academy and the Avalon Park elementary and middle schools. Service Learning Academy students will create lessons and activities for the younger students primarily covering environmental issues and studying the habitat and ecosystem around the school. Students will also engage in service-learning art projects and reading buddies in the classroom.

Kevin McBean and Gray Foreland helped set up the course and volunteered all day!

A Putt Putt Golf Tournament held today in Avalon Park's beautiful Founder Square raised $14,000 for the classroom and $3,000 more in pledges! The Golden Rule Foundation sponsored the event with the East Orange Sun, Avalon Park, the Avalon Park Rotary Club, Fairwinds Credit Union, AirTran, and other corporate sponsors donating money and participating in the tournament. From 8:00am to 5:00pm students from the academy golfed, volunteered to sign up pledgers and keep score. Children and parents from the community dropped by, contributed and played too. From 5:30pm to 9:00 the corporate sponsors and Timber Creek High School administrators golfed. The wonderful Ms. Scherr and her team mate got 5 holes in one!

Everyone had a blast! Thanks to the teachers and students of the academy who collected pledges and volunteered, to the TCHS administrators, to the corporate sponsors, community of Avalon Park and especially to Henry Vales of the Golden Rule Foundation for making the fund raiser fun and profitable!
