Thanks to a grant from Florida Learn and Serve, students once again participated in Volunteer Public Service summer school classes! The students were trained in service learning methods and worked on independent service learning projects in the school, in government offices, and in non-profit agencies. We had students from other Orange and Seminole County high schools join the classes this year. Here are some examples of the service learning projects that students worked on:

Michelle Shipley from Seminole County worked with blind students under the Lighthouse program. She also worked with Florida Learn and Serve in Tallahassee assisting with grant applications! Michelle is enthusiastic, dedicated and caring.

TCHS Service Learning Council students, Mary and Tiffany Barahona worked to assist the Service Learning Academy by helping to compile the service-learning packets for every  OCPS principal.  They prepared for the fall service learning projects with the Global Peace Film Festival, created bulletin boards, tutored TCHS students in math, revised and updated the academy's agency partner directory, completed the 2007-2008 Service Learning Academy scrapbook, and worked on numerous other projects! Mary is the president of the academy and Tiffany, an in-coming freshman, is a member of the Service Learning Council.

Nani Doromal from Boone High School worked to put together quotes and information for a Global Peace Film Festival - OCPS peace calendar. The calendar will feature the winning artwork from the 2008 3rd Annual Student Peace Art Exhibit.

She also worked on a project collecting school supplies for U.S. citizen children of the non-resident workers who live in the Commonwealth of the Northern Maraiana Islands (CNMI). She accompanied her mother to the CNMI and assisted in interviewing foreign workers and their families for a human rights report her mother is preparing for United States officials and NGOs.
